Las Luminarias

El próximo lunes 19 de enero tendrá lugar una de las tradiciones más longevas en Puebla de Alcocer.

Las luminarias en honor a San Sebastián o “SantoBastián”, son unas jornadas de convivencia donde se realizan grandes fogatas y se quema ramón y hojas secas procedentes de los olivares, siendo un foco de reunión importante para vecinos y visitantes de Puebla de Alcocer. A las luminarias se les prende fuego cuando ya es de noche, alrededor de las 20h de la tarde.

Cada barrio realiza su propia fogata donde, para acompañar la jornada, se sirven comidas y bebidas típicas de nuestro pueblo, elaboradas en comunión por los vecinos, como los dulces, la carne guisá, las migas, el chapurrao, el chocolate caliente y un largo etcétera.

Lo curioso de esta jornada de convivencia, que aúna tradición y actualidad, es ver como los más atrevidos compiten en lograr los mejores saltos encima de las ascuas del fuego o ver como se forman corros alrededor de las fogatas y se cantan canciones populares, saltando y bailando al calor de la lumbre.

El Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Puebla de Alcocer colabora, como todos los años, con la donación de ramón y vino de pitarra para todas las fogatas. El total de luminarias será cerca de la decena, incluida la realizada por el Ayuntamiento en el barrio de La Barrera.

El resto de las luminarias estarán repartidas a lo largo de la población, siendo un atractivo importante dentro y fuera de la localidad.

Desde las afueras del municipio, se podrán observar pequeños focos de luz repartidos por todo el pueblo, pareciendo, gracias a la magia de la noche “un pueblo en llamas”.

The bonfires of San(Saint)Bastian

Next Monday, 19^th January there will take place one of the most long-lived traditions in Puebla de Alcocer.

The bonfires in honor of San (Saint) Sebastián or «Santo Bastián «there are a few days of coexistence for the people in the village, where large bonfires are made from the leaves and branches of the Olive groves, the focus being an important meeting source for residents and visitors of Puebla de Alcocer. The bonfires are set alight when it gets dark around 8 o´clock in the evening.

Each vicinity organises its own bonfire where the neighbours prepare typical food and drink of the village such as “carne guisá” meat stews,“migas” crumbed bread and garlic, “chapurrao” a locally brewed alcoholic beverage, hot chocolate and much more is offered to accompany the evening.

The curious thing about this evening together, is the combination of tradition and modernity, it is seen as the most daring challenge to complete the best jumps over the embers of the fire,to watch how people dance around bonfiresand folk sing popular songs, jumping and dancing in the heat of the fire.

The Town Hall of Puebla de Alcocer collaborates, as every year, with the donation of branches and Pitarra wine for all fires. The total amount of bonfires are close to a dozen, including the one made by the Town Hall in the area of La Barrerea.

The rest of the bonfires are distributed throughout the village population, this being a major attraction both inside and outside of the village.

From the outskirts of the village, you will see small pockets of light scattered throughout the community, seeming like, thanks to the magic of the night, «a village in flames.»
